Any advice?

I'm buying a treadmill sometime soon (in the next 3 months)... I just can't picture myself pushing a double jogger in the rain this winter.

Anyone know anything about treadmills? I have no clue what brand to buy. I need to just go to the store and try them out... and then find a cheaper version on Craigslist... but would love any advice. What type do they usually have at the gym? Anyone know about any types that are more compact?

Let me know what advice you get and what treadmill you end up purchasing. I'd love to convince Nick a treadmill is a necessity in our near future!

Take it for what it's worth... I am not a runner but my best friend is an avid treadmill runner. She's been having problems lately with her treadmill because it's really not made to be run on as hard and as much as she does. If you are planning to run 5+ miles every day invest in a commercial grade or plan to buy another one at some point. Also, while craigslist is great you don't know how hard/much someone has actually used it. So you can be taking a chance. Good luck!

I'd go with Janelle against the Craigslist ones - unless you know the seller has never or very rarely used it.

If you can hold out till end of Jan/beginning of Feb - that is when you can find them the cheapest as stores will put them on sale around the holidays in anticipation of New Years Resolutions - by the time February rolls around they are anxious to get rid of the bulky inventory, so you can usually get a great deal.

For the amount of running you do - I'd go with a brand that manufactures commercial as well as home models - not meaning that you have to get a commercial model, but that these companies have usually mastered the design and functionality of the machine.

Names/Brands that I like/worked with: Star Trac, Lancice, Precor, Nautilus, LifeFitness, Nordic Track.

Be sure to get one with a longer deck (better for distance/faster speeds) and also good if your hubby wants to give it a go. You'll also want a powerful motor.

A warranty would also be a must on my list (at least for the motor).

Go to the store with your running shoes on and test out the speeds/grades . . . push all the buttons.

What's sad is that I could go on - let me know if you have any more questions.

I have a hard time imagining you won't be doing any running outside - so another option would be to look into an Eliptical or Treadclimber (have you seen/tried on of these yet) for your "indoor" cardio.

Etta- awesome info. THANK YOU! I want to run outside 2-3 days a week (at least), but have the treadmill as my backup. I can only do workout videos so often.

I totally agree with the Craigslist advice too... but might not be able to wait til Feb for sales... although we'll see. I'll call you later this week to chat more. Thanks for all the great advice! I knew you would have lots.

Kevin totally wants to get a eliptical... but I never get a good enough workout on them. I really just want a treadmill. Maybe eventually we'll get both.
